About Arlene Keeyes

Arlene Keeyes,
Second Generation and Education Team Member

ARLENEArlene is a retired elementary school teacher who taught in the Lakeside Union School District in San Diego County.

The opportunity to fulfill my dream to work with The Butterfly Project as an educator came in 2013, when Jan Landau, asked me to join her.

It is both emotional and gratifying at the same time to be involved with The Butterfly Project because it enables me to carry on the legacy of my parents and to honor the survivors. It has also given me the opportunity to use my skills as a teacher to educate students about the lessons of the Holocaust (remembering the past) in a hopeful and artistic way that will help them and future generations to be more tolerant and respectful towards each other.

The topic of bullying is also taught, in addition to what it means to be an “upstander” (acting more responsibly in the present) so this type of tragedy will NEVER AGAIN happen. Hopefully all of this will help to create a more peaceful future for all people.

Arlene studied at San Diego State University, Point Loma Nazarene University, and National University.
